A woman was arrested for allegedly stealing a machine gun and using her deceased sister’s identification to do it.
Amber Nicole Herring, 25, was taken into custody on Monday and charged with possession of a prohibited firearm/machine gun and theft of a firearm.
The theft took place on May 5th at LoneStar Handgun off in Converse. The store owner sent out an alert on Monday, saying a woman came in and rented a handgun to use in the firing range. A few moments passed, and she rented a Heckler Koch Fully Automatic 9mm MP5, submachine gun. However, instead of going to the shooting range area, she walked out of the store, got into a white Ford Ranger, and drove away.
Authorities started the investigation with the name on the deceased person’s driver’s license that was given. Investigators used that woman’s and her relative’s social media and were able to match Herring to one of the Facebook profiles. They also identified that the woman on Facebook had the same tattoos as the woman on the surveillance video.
Deputies were able to determine that the woman who died in 2022 and whose ID was used was Herring’s sister.
The employee who rented the guns made a positive identification from a photo lineup.
