30-year-old Renee Skoglund was apprehended in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on March 10, after claiming sexual battery two days prior.
Now, she has pled guilty to making a false police report when she claimed that someone raped her in Florida.
Skoglund was charged with misuse of a 911 system, false report of a crime, and fabricating physical evidence.
In the 911 call, Skoglund said that she was on the side of I-75 after experiencing car issues. She then reported that a male suspect placed a towel over her head, threw her in his vehicle, and raped her while her arms and legs were bound.
Skoglund stated that a certain type of rope was used, and detectives found that the item was sold at Walmart locations that were nearby. After reviewing surveillance footage at local Walmart stores, it was discovered that Skoglund bought the rope herself.
Officials noted that Skoglund tried to change her story, but eventually, she confessed to fabricating the story.
Reports have indicated that Skoglund, who was married then, lied about the rape in order to get a free STD test.
Investigators say that Skoglund had consensual sexual intercourse with someone in Hillsborough County and then felt guilty about it because of her marital status.
Skoglund was given two years of community control, a type of house arrest, and eight years of probation. She will also have to pay back $17,245.26 for resources the sheriff’s office used while investigating the matter.
