A woman was discovered dragging a newborn baby by the child’s umbilical cord after giving birth on a sidewalk last week in Hawaii.
On Jan. 16, at about 5 p.m., first responders answered to reports of a homeless woman who had delivered a baby outside in downtown Hilo.
When medics located the 41-year-old woman, they observed the baby’s umbilical cord still connected. Thus, they severed the cord and immediately provided medical attention to the baby girl. The baby was not moving but was breathing. The newborn was then transported to a local hospital.
After the baby was detached from her mother, the woman tried to leave the location prior to being detained. She was then rushed to the same emergency room as the newborn so that she could get medical treatment, as well.
The baby is now said to be in good condition and is expected to survive after receiving pediatric treatment. She has been placed under the custody of the state’s Child Welfare Services, authorities say.
Because she hasn’t been charged at this time and to protect the identity of the child, the woman hasn’t been publicly identified. However, it has been stated that she was about 38 weeks into her pregnancy when she gave birth. Reports also indicate that she had been residing in the downtown vicinity for years, often being seen yelling at passing vehicles and pedestrians.
