A woman, in West Palm Beach, Florida, fell and died as she crossed a drawbridge. It began to ascend while she was walking on it.
The 79-year-old woman has not been named.
Detectives say that the woman was walking her bike along the pedestrian trail of the Royal Park Bridge close to 1 p.m. on Sunday.
As she was near the eastbound lanes, the panels of the bridge began to go up. The woman had almost made it to the end of the bridge. She attempted to grab onto the elevated bridge, and a man tried to help her.
Sadly, the woman fell nearly 60 feet below where mechanical elements of the bridge are located. She died immediately.
Now, investigators are working to figure out how this could have happened.
“There are crossing arms. There are warning signs…multiple steps to make sure no cars or people are on the bridge when it goes up,” stated a public information officer.
Authorities say that the bridge tender was “very upset” at what occurred and is being questioned.
The investigation into the matter will determine if proper methods were followed or if the woman crossed subsequent to the signals going down.
