A jury in Los Angeles found that comedian Bill Cosby is liable in a civil lawsuit brought on by Judy Huth. This is a woman who accused Cosby of sexually assaulting her when she was a teen in the 1970s.
The jury, which included eight women and four men, awarded Huth $500,000 in damages. She wasn’t granted a monetary award for punitive damages.
In 2014, Huth filed a lawsuit accusing Cosby of sexual battery and intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress. Those documents stated that the occurrence happened in 1974 when Huth was 15. That was later changed to when Huth was 16.
Cosby, 84, has stated that the accusations of sexual misconduct are false.
In the filing, Huth disclosed that she met Cosby at a park while filming a movie. Cosby then offered her and a friend a chance to come to his tennis club. He is them said to have invited the girls to his home where he provided them with several alcoholic drinks. He also took them to the Playboy Mansion.
Huth claimed that Cosby told them that if anyone at the Playboy Mansion asked how old they were “they should say they were 19.”
Huth added that Cosby led her to a bedroom in the mansion where he sexually assaulted her.
“I was elated. It has been so many years, so many tears,” Huth said of the verdict.
“It proves that you can run, but you can’t hide,” stated her lawyer, Nathan Goldberg.
Cosby wasn’t at the trial or the verdict and is planning for an appeal.
50 women have come forward since 2005, accusing Cosby of sexual assault. He served a little under three years in prison after being convicted of assaulting Andrea Constand. That case was overturned on an appeal, and Cosby was freed in September 2021.
