A sewage spill in Plano that traveled into White Rock Creek has forced city officials to suspend all water activities at the lake until further notice.
This decision comes after 1.5 million gallons of untreated sewage entered White Rock Creek, which feeds into White Rock Lake over a 12-mile stretch.
The sewage spill was caused by a mechanical malfunction at a lift station near the President George Bush Turnpike and the Dallas North Tollway last Thursday.
Initially, it was believed that the spill would not have a significant impact on the environment. However, high levels of bacteria in the lake were recorded by the Dallas Park and Recreation Department.
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has launched an investigation into the spill and the North Texas Municipal Water District is working on repairs at the lift station.
Plano officials say their city’s drinking water has not been affected by the spill.
