Eddie Bernice Johnson, a trailblazer in Texas politics, has died.
Johnson, a longtime Dallas congressional representative, was the first Black woman elected to public office in Dallas in 1972. This is when she earned a seat in the Texas House.
In addition to that, Johnson was the first woman to lead the Texas House Labor Committee. That made her the first woman in Texas history to lead a major House committee.
Not only that, but Johnson was the first Black woman to be the regional director for the Department of Health, and Education and Welfare when President Jimmy Carter appointed her in 1977.
In 1986, Johnson became a part of the Texas Senate where she served until she began to represent Texas’ 30th Congressional District from 1993 to 2023. This area covers most of the Dallas-area.
With all these accomplishments, Eddie Bernice Johnson was the first registered nurse to serve in Congress, as well.
Johnson was 88 years old.
