A pitcher at Weatherford College, in Texas, tackled a member of another team after a home run.
Now, Pitcher Owen Woodard has been removed from the team. Prior to this, he had been placed on a four-game suspension by the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference.
The incident occurred as North Central Texas College’s Josh Phillips was going from third base to make a home run. Then, Woodard was seen running off the mound and ramming him. Because he was thrown out of the game for taunting, Phillips was punished with a two-game suspension.
Immediately after Woodard slammed into Phillips, many players got off of the bench and went out onto the field.
The two-games suspensions were also handed out to “all team members for NCTC that were in the dugout or “bullpen.” Any assistant coaches that made their way out onto the field received the same consequences. Four Weatherford College players and assistant coaches were also given two-game suspensions for their part in the chaos.
“We are shocked and disappointed at what happened in our game today. We don’t condone this type of behavior…,” stated Weatherford Coach Jeff Lightfoot.
Wednesday’s game was just the first in the four-game series between the two schools. After the brawl that took place during the first game, both teams had to forfeit. Furthermore, NCT forfeited Games 2 and 3 because their player roster will be shortened because of the suspensions.
On Saturday, Game 4 is set to take place.
