A scam is currently taking place by phone, and the Dallas Police Department wants the public to be aware.
The Financial Investigations Unit stated that scammers are deceiving customers using the Dallas Water Utilities (DWU) spoofed primary phone number. That main number is (214) 651-1441 and shows on a customer’s Caller ID.
Scammers’ methods are to threaten existing customers with the termination of their water services if they don’t provide a payment.
DWU has released a statement on the matter and posted it on their website. They note that they don’t call customers when their utilities bills are behind. Instead, they send notices via U.S. mail.
The department asks that people take certain steps if they get a call from a fraudster.
1. Email the issue to forgery-dpd@dallascityhall.com or call (214) 671-3543, or
2. If you don’t have access to email, find your closest substation to make a report, or
3. If you have experienced a financial loss, you may submit a theft report on the Online Police Reporting System at http://www.dallaspolice.net
