A new video has been released in regards to a Black seventh-grader, only known as 13-year-old A.G. He was shot by police last month. The video depicts the boy with his hands up and no weapon when he was gunned down.
The incident occurred during a foot chase on May 18. The Chicago, Illinois, police department says that the teen had been running from a stolen car when the incident happened. However, many witnesses had reported that the boy’s hands were up, and he wasn’t in possession of a weapon.
Now, newly released footage seems to validate that claim. The footage shows the teen fleeing from the pavement and going towards a lighted gas station. His hands were up with no weapon.
As he turns to his right, he is then shot by an officer. The video showed the Black teen collapsing in front of the gas station. About twelve officers had been chasing him.
Officers can then be observed grabbing and holding A.G. by the legs and shirt. Meanwhile, his arm was being dragged on the ground.
Initially, Chicago Police Chief David Brown had said that the boy was dragged in that manner for a reason. It was to quickly remove him away from a gas pump that might explode.
No weapon was located on or near the teen, and he faced no charges. The pursuit had begun when the teen was seen in a vehicle that the police were trying to pull over. He then began to run.
The teen’s relatives have filed a lawsuit, citing that the Chicago police officer shot A.G. “recklessly, callously, and wantonly.” They also say the teen complied with officers’ commands.
To add, the family complained that officers were dragging A.G. instead of rendering aid. They say officers were more worried about another policeman who had a minor crash near the scene.
A.G. survived the shooting but has experienced a major spinal injury and can no longer move his legs.
