Alesandro Mata-Moreno, 52, was arrested after someone observed him putting a child in the trunk of a car on Wednesday evening.

On Thursday, Mata was charged with intentional, reckless child endangerment. His bond was set at $25,000.

At around 8:30 p.m., officers arrived to the scene at 1900 block of E. Martin Luther King Blvd. to answer to a welfare check. A witness had reported seeing a man place a child in the trunk of a white Honda Civic with a black and white bumper.

The car was located and pulled over on Interstate 45 near the 226 mile marker.

When authorities opened the trunk, they discovered a Hispanic male inside. He wasn’t tied up but appeared to be nervous.

The driver told police that he was going to Houston after leaving Colorado. He said his 13-year-old nephew was in the trunk because there were no available seat for him to sit in.

The mother of the boy and other children in the car were taken to a medical facility for an evaluation. Right now, the mother hasn’t been charged with any offense.

The driver was apprehended and taken to Navarro County Jail.
