Authorities believe that two young children may have died from freezing while they were asleep in their van, which was parked in a Detroit casino garage.
Reports suggest that a mother and her five children parked their van in the Hollywood Casino parking structure around 1 a.m. on Monday before running out of gas shortly after.By noon, the mother found her 9-year-old son unresponsive and called a family friend for help to take them to the hospital.
While at the hospital, the children’s grandmother informed them that another child, a 2-year-old girl, was also unresponsive. The friend then returned to transport the little girl to the hospital.
Both the 9-year-old boy and the 2-year-old girl were declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.
The other three siblings were evaluated and treated, and they were reported to be in stable condition as of Monday afternoon.
The children’s mother was detained and is cooperating with police. No arrest have been made but police have not ruled out filing criminal charges.
