This week, four Rankin County, Mississippi, law enforcement officers will be sentenced for torturing two men. Two other officers that were involved received their punishment on Tuesday.
Ex-deputies Hunter Elward and Jeffrey Middleton were sentenced in federal court after pleading guilty to 16 charges in connection to the January 2023 torture of two Black men.
Elward was given a 241-month prison sentence, or 20 years, for discharging a firearm during a crime of violence.
Middleton was sentenced to 17.5 years in prison for his part in the incident.
Documents show that on January 24, 2023, a white neighbor reported that she had observed suspicious activity from Black men that were staying close by.
Then, some shift officers, who labeled themselves the “Goon Squad” because of their willingness to use excessive force and not report it, were sent to look into the matter.
During the incident, the officers beat Jenkins and Parker, sexually assaulted them with a sex toy, and shocked them with Tasers, for close to 90 minutes as they were handcuffed.
The Department of Justice noted that the officers gave no assistance to Jenkins as he was bleeding on the ground. But, they attempted to come up with a cover story and “plant” and “tamper” with evidence, so their stories would add up.
The officers later admitted to going into the residence where Jenkins and Parker were residing. They confessed to apprehending and handcuffing them “without probable cause to believe that they had committed any crime,” called them racial slurs, and threaten that they better stay out of Rankin County.
Four other ex-Rankin County sheriff deputies will be sentenced on Wednesday and Thursday. They are Christian Dedmon, Brett McAlpin, Daniel Opdyke and Joshua Hartfield.
