A camel escaped from a petting zoo in Tennessee and killed two men, authorities say.

On Thursday, Bobby Matheny, 42, and Tommy Gunn, 67, lost their lives after being cornered and attacked by the animal in the city of Obion.

Officials wound up killing the camel.

Authorities first arrived on the scene after receiving a call about a camel attacking people. They then observed the men unconscious and the camel running wildly.

As emergency crews moved people to safety, the camel starting attacking a deputy’s car. The camel was then put down to protect everyone.

Both of the men were pronounced dead at the location.

It isn’t known how the animal got loose.

One of the victim’s relatives had stated that the men were at the farm to assist and attempt to capture the camel before it began to stomp on them until they died.

It was noted that adult camels are able to crush a person’s arms, legs, and neck as they kick “forwards and backwards.”

“Most animals can only kick backwards. Camels will do a combination of all those things while kneeling forward to crush you,” an expert stated.
