Two Dallas Police Officers Placed on Leave After Leaving the Scene of a Crash with a Vehicle They Were Pursuing
Two Dallas Police officers face termination for chasing a vehicle, then leaving the scene when the car crashes and engulfs in flames.
Around 2:30 a.m. May 13, rookie officer Darrien Robertson and his trainer Sr. Cpl. Leonard Anderson see a car leaving a gas station without its headlights on. The officers “light up” the vehicle and indicate for him to pull over.
The vehicle continues driving and the officers are now in pursuit. After reaching a high rate of speed, the officers ended the pursuit.
DPD has a no-chase policy unless the driver is wanted for a violent felony, or being pulled over for a violent felony.
Once the officers stopped chasing the vehicle, they turned their lights and sirens off and began to leave the area. That’s when the vehicle they were chasing, crashes along Martin Luther King Boulevard and engulfs in flames.
On DPD dash-cam footage, the car can be seen jumping a curb and crashing immediately after the cruiser turned off its lights.
Security footage from an intersection near the crash shows the vehicle speed through a stop sign and almost hit a pedestrian. The officers stop at the stop sign and turn off their lights and sirens. Seconds later the vehicle crashes. Instead of rushing to the scene and rendering aid, the officers make a right turn and leave the area.
Dash cam footage shows the moment the officers witnessed the crash.
Rookie cop Robertson could be heard asking his trainer, “Did you see that?”
Sr. Cpl. Anderson, who was driving, replied, “That’s his fault.”
Chief Eddie Garcia acknowledged that his officers did not stop to help the driver. Instead, bystanders rushed to pull him from his burning car. First responders then arrived and were ready to do CPR.
“It was obvious something happened to the vehicle when it got to the intersection,” Garcia said. “To me, that was the most disturbing portion of that tape.”
After learning that the vehicle caught on fire, the officers returned to the scene. Body-cam footage shows the officers approach the civilians and ask them if they got the driver out safely.
The driver survived, and the officers have been placed on administrative leave. They face possible termination but will most likely not face criminal charges.
DPD considered charging the officers with failure to stop and render aid but chose not to because it only applies when a person clearly caused an accident before fleeing the scene.
