Two children have died after a man on an ATV crashed into their off-roading vehicle over the Fourth of July Weekend. The suspect then fled the scene leaving the children to die.
Jacob Martinez, 12, and Christina Bird, 11, were with both of their families on a trip to the desert in Apple Valley, California.
On Saturday evening at around 9 p.m. the two kids were riding their ATV close to their family’s camp ground when a man on another ATV crashed into them. Immediately after the crash, witnesses say the man turned off his lights and slowly drove off without helping the victims.
Jacob was killed on impact.
Christina was transported to Loma Linda Children’s Hospital and put on life support. Her spinal cord up to her brain had been severed and she suffered multiple broken bones.
The little girl fought for her life but passed away Wednesday morning at 8:50 a.m.
Authorities are searching for the suspect and believe his vehicle is a 2021 Polaris RZR Turbo S or S4 in a “Velocity Orange Madness” color.
The investigation remains ongoing.
