Two brothers in Phoenix, Arizona, were given their punishment for their part in trying to conceal the remains of a 17-year-old girl.
22-year-old Daniel Torrealba Blas was sentenced to 2.25 years in prison after confessing to hiding the remains of Destiny Munoz. He will also have to be on probation for four years.
On October 5, 2021, authorities found Munoz’s body inside a container, covered with plastic and tape inside of a vehicle. It seemed as though the girl’s body had been decomposing over multiple days.
When the discovery was made, police said that they had found blood splatter and blood cleanup in Torrealba’ Blas’s residence. All the furniture had been taken out of the home, as well.
Edwin Blas, the 20-year-old brother of the defendant, was apprehended for assisting Daniel in getting rid of Munoz’s body before police found it.
He was given a 90-day jail sentence and two years probation subsequent to pleading guilty to evidence tampering.
Although they were charged with hiding Munoz’s body, the brothers were not charged with Munoz’s death.
Torrealba Blas gave authorities various stories of what happened to Munoz, the mother of his child. One story he gave was that the two had been arguing, and he shoved her, making her accidentally hit her head. Then, he said that Munoz unintentionally shot herself in the face while arguing over the gun. In another version, he said that Munoz usually threatened to kill herself, so he told her to “go ahead and do it.”
The Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office has listed Munoz’s manner of death as “undetermined.” However, they did say that she suffered a gunshot injury.
If new evidence is found, prosecutors may file more charges against Daniel Blas.
