Travis And Gregory McMichael Sentenced To Life In Prison, Neighbor Given 35-Year Sentence In The Killing Of Ahmad Arbery
On Monday, a federal judge sentenced Travis McMichael, and his father, Gregory McMichael, to an additional sentence of life in prison. This was for committing a federal hate crime offense when chasing and killing Ahmad Arbery.
Their neighbor, William “Roddie” Bryan, was sentenced to 35 years in prison.
The three will have to serve their sentences in state prison, not in federal prison which their lawyers had asked for.
The McMichaels and Bryan, who were all white, chased Arbery, a Black man, as he ran in his community in February 2020. The defendants then approached him.
In November, the McMichaels and Bryan were convicted by a jury for the 2020 murder of Arbery.
Prosecutors had stated that because Arbery was a Black man, it was a leading factor in his death. Thus, a federal trial was put into place because it was considered a hate crime.
In February, all three men had already been found guilty of interference with rights and attempted kidnapping in the federal case.
During the state trial, all three men were sentenced to prison with no parole for the McMichaels. They had been in county jail under U.S. Marshals custody since then.
