A 2-year-old born with two penises has had the larger one successfully removed in a rare surgery.

The little boy from Brazil was born with diphallia, a rare birth defect that affects one out of every 5 to 6 million babies. According to the Federal University of São Paulo doctors, the boy had a form of diphallia where two penises fully-formed.

To treat the boy, the doctors first inspected the penises on imagining tests. Each penis had a separate urethra which is the tube that runs from the bladder to the tip of the penis to release urine.

The imaging tests revealed that the left penis was larger than the right one. It also showed that the child only had one bladder and one prostate, which both penises were connected to.

Doctors performed a test where they surgically opened the left penis through the hole in its’ tip. They found that the left one didn’t have a complete functioning urethra, which could lead to bladder tumors and kidney infections.

Doctors confirmed the boy’s right penis was properly functioning and decided to remove the left one.

For the surgery, they created an incision and removed the skin, then removed the penis’ inner structure at the base.

It is not clear how well the boy will be able to achieve erections in the future, given he only has one erection chamber in his remaining penis.
