The Internal Revenue Service will be making it mandatory for online taxpayers to show their face before gaining access to their accounts.
A message was recently shown on the agency’s webpage. It instructed users to create a security account with a company named ID.me.
“You won’t be able to log in with your existing IRS username and password starting in summer 2022,” the message noted.
When starting an account, users will have to provide certain documentation. They also have to take a live video selfie. This will be required in order to make and look at payments and to view tax records.
ID.me deals with digital identification services. During the pandemic, they signed a contract with the U.S. government.
One user found a problem while using the ID.me app. It didn’t recognize her face, and she couldn’t gain access for 72 hours at a time.
Additionally, a transgender user couldn’t look up their state benefits because the gender on their driver’s license and passport weren’t the same.
