Kari Maris, a teacher at a private Christian school in Texas, was suddenly terminated after going to a drag show in Houston with a colleague earlier this month.
For the last 20 years, Maris was a physical education teacher at First Baptist Academy which is located in Baytown. On July 13, she went to a song-along show at Hamburger Mary’s.
Maris posted an image of her and a colleague with the drag queens on Facebook and said that they were having fun.
Shortly after that, Maris and the unnamed co-worker were called by their school and were informed that they would have to answer to the board for their “ungodly” behavior.
Maris stated that she couldn’t believe it and didn’t know that her behavior was “bad.” Although she said that it is just like going to the theatre, the board didn’t agree. Maris and her colleague were fired, and there is no appeal process.
Maris discussed the incident on Facebook and asked others to remove themselves from her page if they are offended at what she posts. This included a picture of her with drag queens.
Her post generated over 1,300 responses, including more than 450 shares and hundreds of comments.
I mean even though it’s not bad, but it’s the school policy. Which however, i feel like it’s discriminating! They can have fun anytime and anywhere after school hours. It’s not like they were on the school time! SMH
I feel what she does on her fine is her business. Besides I believe it you going to fix her then close the school cuz the Bible says we are not to judge only God can do the board and everyone who has judged her for going to a show should be fired. Tell me there isn’t 1 person that hasn’t seen a show that wasn’t bad in one way or another
