Darryl George, a Black high school student in Texas, was suspended from school just days after a state law began that prohibits discrimination based on hairstyles.
George is a junior at Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu. He had gotten multiple warnings and was put in in-school suspension because his hair was loc’d in a ponytail.
This occured during the same week as the Crown Act went into effect in Texas. This prohibits the discriminatory practices against natural hair textures. This includes styles such as, braids, locs, twists, and knots at places of employment and at school.
Now, George’s family has obtained a lawyer and may take legal action.
The school has stated that George was suspended because of the length of his hair per their dress code. They added that it was not because of the hairstyle. The dress code states that the hair of males shouldn’t go past their ear lobes, they noted.
If George doesn’t cut his hair by the end of the week, he could be placed in an alternative education program.
“I want to see their policy change and stop being discriminatory against Black kids, and I want to see my child out of ISS. I don’t want any other child that’s coming behind my son to go through this again,” George’s mother stated.
Locs are known to be an African hairstyle where hair is coiled, braided, twisted, or rolled to look similar to a rope-like style. It stops hair from losing moisture and can last for quite a long time.

It is now against the law to discriminate agianst ones hair style in any place of business so they definitely have a reason to file a lawsuit
It’s not about the style of his hair. It’s about the length of his hair. Per school policy.
Schools need to focus on teaching kids to read, write, etc… and stop trying to ‘parent’ other peoples children. Hair length, style and/or color are NOT things that a school should be involved in!!
Wtf does hair length or style matter!??!?! I have never understood stuff like this. Its hair its not distracting. Thats coming from someone with ADHD lol who gets easily distracted.
