A Texas midwife has been arrested on allegations of conducting illegal abortions and operating a network of unlicensed clinics in the Houston area.
Maria Margarita Rojas, 48, faces charges for providing unlawful abortions and practicing medicine without a valid license.
Authorities claim that Rojas ran several clinics in Houston where she allegedly performed illegal abortions, violating the state’s strict abortion laws. This incident marks the first time a healthcare provider has been criminally charged for performing an abortion in Texas since the Texas Human Life Protection Act took effect in 2022.
In a statement, Attorney General Ken Paxton highlighted his dedication to protecting the unborn and ensuring that those who engage in illegal abortions are prosecuted. His office has also sought a temporary restraining order to close Rojas’ clinics to prevent further operations.
A warrant for Rojas’ arrest was issued on March 5 due to alleged criminal conspiracy related to practicing medicine. She was booked into Waller County Jail but was later released on a $10,000 bond. Rojas was arrested again on March 17 and charged with performing illegal abortions. If found guilty, she could face up to 20 years in prison.
