Texas Makes Abortions Illegal After Supreme Court Overturns Roe v. Wade

Roe v. Wade was put in place by the US Supreme Court in the early 1970s. It ruled that no state was allowed to pass a law banning abortion. This landmark decision made a woman’s right to privacy include the unborn child she was carrying.

On Friday morning, the Supreme Court overturned that ruling, taking away the constitutional right a woman has to carry or terminate her pregnancy. Now, it would be up to the state to declare if abortion is permitted or not in that state.

Within minutes of the ruling Friday morning, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton made a statement, declaring abortion illegal in Texas.

Before it was overturned, Texas already passed a law that would make abortions illegal in its state if Roe v. Wade was not in place anymore. This law that has already been in place, otherwise known as the Trigger Law, is currently in 13 states.

Under the Trigger Law, if any doctor performs an abortion procedure, they could receive a life in prison sentence. They will also be ordered to pay a $100,000 fine.

An abortion may only be legally performed under one circumstance; if a woman’s life is in danger. Any woman facing medical issues, whether it be cancer or depression, does not qualify for the exception.

The woman does not face any penalties under the Trigger Law.
