A tragic incident occurred early Monday morning when an infant lost his life after being attacked by pit bulls.
The event took place at a residence on Spruce Ridge Drive, close to Kitty Hawk Drive in Northeast Bexar County.
According to Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar, the one-year-old boy was being cared for by 36-year-old babysitter Heather Rodriguez and her 13-year-old daughter at the time of the attack.
Rodriguez reportedly left the house, leaving the child alone with her teenage daughter.
While the baby and teen were in a bedroom, one of the dogs broke through a damaged door and began to attack the infant. Other dogs soon joined in the assault.
Sheriff Salazar stated that the teenager tried to pull the dogs away from the child but was bitten in the struggle.
He mentioned that the baby sustained severe injuries to his neck and face.
In a desperate attempt to save him, the teen took the infant to a bathroom, but the dogs managed to follow them inside. After grabbing her phone to call for help, she retreated to another bedroom, barricading the door with her body until assistance arrived.
The infant was rushed to SAMC hospital in critical condition.
Rodriguez has been arrested and charged with Serious Bodily Injury to a Child by Omission. She is expected to face additional charges in this case.
