On Wednesday, close to 11 a.m., JaDun Byrd, 19, was shot in a parking lot in St.Louis, Mo. He had just been dropped off by a Lyft driver, was lost, and was on a video call with his mother.

JaDun was meeting his mom at her job to pick up her car. His mother said he was dropped off on the wrong side of the hospital building where she worked.

JaDun succumbed to his injuries.

“They just shot up that boy,” Leslie Byrd, JaDun’s mother, said she heard someone say. She had been Facetiming with her son and could see his head roll back and hands clinch.

Byrd doesn’t think that her son was the intended target. “They didn’t even rob him. They didn’t take anything from him…just shot him and pulled off.”

JaDun enjoyed basketball, studying engineering, and mentoring others.

His mother had a message she wanted other parents in the area to know.

“Gain control and love on your children unconditionally. Allow them to be who they need to be with just the appropriate guidance.”
