On April 6, a 13-year-old boy with autism was fatally struck by a vehicle right after he got off of the school bus.

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office in Detroit, Michigan, released a statement. They say that the school bus driver, Debra White, 65, didn’t activate the school bus’s stop sign nor the bus’s stop lights while Zyair Harris crossed the road.

On Monday, Zyair passed away at a medical facility.

“My son was autistic, so you didn’t care. You just let him out in the middle of the street. And then when he got hit, she pulled out; she saw him get hit and still pulled off,” Cassandra Jones, the boy’s mother said.

White has been charged with second-degree child abuse and failure to stop at the scene resulting in death. Her charges will be reviewed again once results from the medical examiner’s office are finalized.

White was released from jail on a $50,000 personal bond.

She is set to appear in court again on April 19.
