Kathryn Moore, a teacher, is suing Utah’s Park City School District for not adhering to Title IX and “state breach of contract.”
Moore alleges the district retaliated against her for reporting sexual harassment occurrences among her students.
Moore was a short-term worker for the 2020-2021 school year at Parley’s Park Elementary School.
In December 2020, some of Moore’s fifth-grade girls told her that a boy was touching them inappropriately and looking at them in a manner that didn’t seem right. Moore disclosed the information to the principal and was told to contact the girls’ parents.
Two weeks after that, the principal encouraged Moore to separate her class by girls and boys. She was also instructed to call the boy’s parents regarding the complaints.
Although she didn’t agree, Moore separated her class with the principal taking no further steps.
In January 2021, Moore’s students were questioned one at a time outside of her classroom without her knowledge. She was told that an investigation showed everything was fine and that she could integrate the class again.
Two weeks following that, a replacement teacher came stating that Moore requested a transfer although she hadn’t. The principal later said it was a mistake.
The next morning, Moore was summoned to the office and was told she was being given a chance to go to another school, but Moore stated that it felt more like being forced.
She is now seeking lost wages, benefits, punitive damages, and legal fees.
