A teacher at Winterville Charter Academy, in North Carolina, has quit her job. This comes after she allegedly told her Black students that if it weren’t for the Constitution, they would be her “field slave.”

After learning about the comment, the principal sent a letter to parents of the eighth grade class. It states that appropriate measures have been put into place after the “racially insensitive lesson.”

Additionally, the memo noted that two “racially insensitive words” were said to have been used by two students. However, the teacher took no action to correct that language from being used in the classroom.

“Culturally sensitive training for the teacher that resigned will be provided, along with proactive training measures for our current and future staff members,” the principal added.

The school has been open since 2015. 61% of its students identify as Black or African-American.
