A North Carolina teacher was shot to death in a shootout with the Mexican Drug Cartel last week according to news reports.
Barney Harris, who was a coach and teacher at Union Academy in Monroe, alongside his brother-in-law Steven Stewart were allegedly trying to take drugs and cash from a trailer used by the cartel last Thursday when a gun war broke out, according to investigators.
The trailer was owned by the vicious Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion, better known as the New Generation Jalisco Cartel, being named as of the world’s most powerful drug trafficking operations, according to police.
Harris and Stewart broke into the trailer in a park located in Alamance County, but were immediately caught by 18-year-old Alonso Lara, County Sheriff Terry Johnson released in a statement Wednesday in a press conference.
Harris and Stewart allegedly executed Lara when he didn’t tell them where the drugs and money where stashed, Johnson said.
“Mr. Harris, he had a bulletproof vest on, unfortunately it didn’t work with the kind of ammunition that was used,” Johnson added.
“They went there to do what was done except they did not think it was going to backfire on them.”
Stewart was arrested and taken into custody after the shooting. He is facing charges of murder and armed robbery.
Johnson said the other owner of the trailer, Daniel Lara, has a warrant of trafficking cocaine and currently is wanted. The sheriff believes that Daniel fled to Mexico to avoid being arrested.
Police officials located 2 pounds of cocaine and $7000 after searching the trailer.
“I am still worried about some retaliation because the Mexican Cartels, they don’t forget,” said Johnson.
“They are going to pay someone back, and that concerns me a great deal as sheriff of this county.”
