Fort Worth police arrested a man after he fatally shot and killed a TCU student early Friday morning in the West 7th District.
Around 1 a.m. officers were patrolling the area when they heard multiple gunshots ring out and responded to the 3000 block of Bledsoe Street.
Upon arriving they found the victim, 21 year old Wes Smith, lying on the ground suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. He was transported to an area hospital where he later died from his injuries.
Officers spoke with witnesses outside the Your Mom’s House bar that said Smith was just standing around when 21 year old Matthew Purdy approached him. They said the two exchanged words and they saw Smith fall to the ground.
After he fell the witness said Purdy stood over Smith and shot him in the back of the head before fleeing the scene. He also struck a female witness in the head with his gun as she attempted to run away.
Around 1:45 p.m. officers located Purdy, not far from the scene, and placed him in the patrol car.
While in the patrol car an officer noticed movement with Purdy and learned that he still had a handgun on him and that he had taken it apart.
Once they made it to the police station Purdy told officers that he shot Smith once in the stomach, the shoulder and the in the back of the head. He also told police that he would have shot the witnesses if he had more ammunition.
Purdy was charged with murder and transported to Tarrant Tarrant County Jail. His bond is set at $500,000.
Smith was from Germantown, Tennessee. He was in his junior year and a star athlete at TCU.
