A newly released recording shows several students and witnesses swiftly stepping in to assist an Utah mother and her two young children after they were hit and stuck under a vehicle on Tuesday.

The incident occurred just prior to 4 p.m. in the parking lot of Layton Christian Academy. Bridgette Ponson, who is employed at the school, had been walking with her 2-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter when a driver struck them, pinning them underneath the vehicle.

Many students and others quickly ran over to lift the vehicle and to free the three people. Ponson is said to be the real hero, though, because she used her body as a shield beneath the vehicle.

“…it was incredible to see her get off of her child as fast as she could so that he would be OK. And he is better because of that,” stated one bystander.

Authorities say that the 2-year-old was seriously injured and taken to a children’s medical facility. The mother and 3-year-old were taken to a medical facility that was close by. Their conditions aren’t known, but all three are expected to survive.

The head of the school has praised all who rushed in to help, noting that it is a miracle that everyone survived, as the 2-year-old had “tire tracks across his back.”

Detectives say that the driver stopped and cooperated with authorities. She was said to have been driving slowly through the parking lot at the time of the accident. Authorities say that the sun in her eyes may have been a factor.

A GoFundMe has been set up as the family attempts to raise $35,000 to help with medical expenses. As of Thursday morning, $20,500 had been donated.
