Highway Patrol Trooper John Horton, from North Carolina, died during a traffic stop when another trooper, his brother, slammed into him on Monday night.

Authorities say that John was standing on the shoulder of the road in Mooresboro, accompanied by the driver that he had just stopped. Then, both of them were struck by the trooper’s brother’s police vehicle as it came down the road.

James Horton was headed to help his brother with the traffic stop. He lost control of his patrol vehicle, hit his brother’s patrol car, and crashed into the two.

Dusty Beck, a 26-year-old father of three, was the other driver. He died at the scene.

John Horton was quickly taken to a medical facility where he succumbed to his injuries. He leaves behind a wife and six children. He was a 15-year-veteran of the department. It was said that his younger brother wanted to be a police officer because of him.

No charges have been filed in the occurrence.

An ongoing investigation, conducted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the highway patrol Collision Reconstruction Unit, will continue.
