STAAR Scores Declined Tremendously During the Coronavirus Pandemic

The 2021 STAAR results are in. After comparing them to the results of 2019, data shows more students in Texas are not meeting grade-level objectives.

The Texas Education Agency says that learning loss was found in all subjects except English I and English II. Math was noted as seeing the biggest decline. They also reported that districts with higher numbers of virtual learners experienced more of a loss.

The Texas State Teachers Association understands that virtual learning was appropriate throughout the pandemic. However, they say these results validate the idea that it isn’t effective.

Thus, TEA said they will assist schools  with accelerated learning. Their goal is to provide supplies for instruction and the tools and money needed to do so.

“The data may be disheartening. Our teachers and school leaders are building  action plans. This will support students in the new school year,” Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath stated.
