On Friday, 79-year-old Oh Young-soo, South Korea’s “Squid Game” actor, was found guilty of sexual misconduct. This comes after he was charged with assaulting a woman back in 2017.
In 2022, he became the first South Korean to win a Golden Globe award. He had been the best supporting actor in the series for his work as appearing to be a vulnerable old man in the popular Netflix dystopian hit.
The court in Seoul, South Korea, decided that Oh Young-soo would be sentenced to 8 months in prison, suspended for 2 years.
In addition to that, he has been instructed to complete 40 hours of courses on sexual violence.
The court determined that the victim’s own notes of the assault and her accusations are “consistent and appear to be statements that cannot be made without actually experiencing them,” the judge noted.
“Squid Game” is a series that shows a dark world. It is where oppressed people are made to compete in deadly types of common children’s games.
“Squid Game” was released in 2021. In less than a month, it gained a shocking 111 million viewers.
The series is very popular. Thus, it has increased South Korea’s outsized influence on global popular culture. It has won over the likes of K-pop band BTS and the award-winning film “Parasite.”
Several known people in South Korea’s movie industry had been accused of sexual assault, as well. These include the late filmmaker Kim Ki duk and actor Cho Jae-hyun.
