Monica Cannon-Grant, 41, is the founder of an anti-violence organization in Boston.
On Tuesday, she was apprehended on federal charges related to the misuse of donations and grants to the nonprofit. It was said that she used the funds for hotels, car rentals, gas, groceries, nail shops, and repairs to her car.
She and her husband, Clark Grant, 38, are facing an 18-count indictment. Some of the charges include conspiracy and wire fraud. This is related to accusations that they defrauded the Department of Unemployment Assistance and a mortgage lending company in Chicago.
In 2020, 16-year-old Mikayla Miller was discovered hanged, in Boston. Cannon-Grant then became a spokesperson for the family and widely-known. Although Miller’s death was ruled a suicide, Cannon-Grant and the girl’s relatives say that she was murdered.
Court documents state that from 2017 to 2020, the pair took money out of VIB Financial and transferred it to themselves. They did so through cash withdrawals, cashed checks, and buying items with debit cards.
The anti-violence nonprofit’s goal was to help lessen violence by raising social awareness and helping community causes in Boston. The indictment states that it received over $1 million in donations and grants.
