Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced Sunday that Texas Health and Human Services Commission has received federal approval to allow Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients to purchase hot and ready to to eat foods due to the winter storm.
Recipients will be able to use their Lone Star card to purchase items such as rotisserie chicken, deli items and other hot and ready foods.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service approved the program through the end of March in any state that accepts SNAP.
On February 19 the state of Texas received approval to allow SNAP recipients to apply for replacement benefits for food lost or destroyed due to the winter storm.
In a statement Governor Abbott said, “As we continue to recover from this winter storm, the state is ensuring that Texans in need have access to hot food to feed their families. I thank our federal partners at the U.S. Department of Agriculture for approving this waiver.”
