On Thursday, Philadelphia banned ski masks and other facial coverings in the city, citing that most unlawful activities have been committed by individuals wearing them.

Although some opposed the notion, the vote passed 13-2.

“We must send a message that masks are of no discernible public or private good when they just create fear and anxiety,” said one Philly councilman.

The new law bans individuals from sporting ski masks in parks, schools, or on public transportation. However, there are some exceptions for religious reasons. Those that don’t follow the order could be fined $250-$2,000 if committing a crime.

Many law enforcement officers support the measure. However, those like the ACLU have stated that this could violate free expression rights and unjustly target minors.

The bill is now expected to be signed by Mayor James Kenney.
