Police are investigating after a six year old boy shot a teacher at a Virginia elementary school Friday afternoon.

Authorities were called to Richneck Elementary, located on the 200 block of Tyner Drive, around 2 p.m. on January 6 for a shooting.

When they arrived they found 30 year old Abigail Zwerner suffering from a gunshot. She was rushed to Riverside Regional Medical Center with life threatening injuries.

During the preliminary investigation officers learned that a first grader was responsible for the shooting following an altercation in a classroom.

The student was taken into custody and no one else was injured.

After further investigating Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew said the shooting was not accidental.

Authorities are working to determine how the child got possession of the handgun and what led up to the shooting.

As of Saturday January 7, Zwerner was listed in stable condition. This shooting investigation remains ongoing.
