Sheriff’s Deputy Quits After Mother And Two Sons Discovered Frozen To Death In Field

A sheriff’s deputy, who had gone to look for a mother and her two young sons whose remains were eventually found frozen in a field, has quit.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, in Michigan, stated that the unnamed deputy resigned on Jan. 22.

The remains of 35-year-old Monica Cannady, 9-year-old Kyle Milton, and 3-year-old Malik Milton were discovered on Jan. 15. They were found in Pontiac subsequent to Cannady’s 10-year-old daughter going to a residence close by. She then told somebody that her “family was dead in a field.”

As they weren’t properly clothed for the weather, an autopsy found that the three died from hypothermia.

Cannady had been having mental health problems, and her relatives had been attempting to get her psychiatric treatment.

Monica “believed that someone was trying to kill her and that everybody was in on it” prior to the deaths.

On Jan. 13, police first came in contact with Cannady, but she denied assistance. The family was seen again later on, and a deputy was summoned to check a location about 20 miles northwest of Detroit, for Cannady’s relatives.

Detectives say that the family may have been outside for three days. This is although they had a residence about a mile from where they were discovered.

The location wasn’t totally searched, and the deputy also didn’t locate or come into contact with the family.

Other deputies later looked for the family that day but didn’t find them.

“Over the course of a couple of days, we actually had been getting calls about a woman and kids not appropriately dressed for the conditions. Deputies would go there, look all through the area, and couldn’t find anybody,” stated Sheriff Michael Bouchard.

He is now advocating for improvement in mental health support.
