Sheriff’s Deputy Arrested for Stealing Over $3k in Gifts from Two Weddings

921views

A former Arizona sheriff’s deputy was arrested after he stole over $3,000 in gifts from two weddings while pretending to be a guest.

On Wednesday, Landon Earl Rankin, 54, was arrested and charged with two counts of burglary. Officers also charged him with possession of fentanyl and methamphetamine, which was found on him.

Investigators learned that Rankin went to two different weddings in April and pretended to be a guest. During the receptions, he would steal the wedding card boxes that contained between $3,000 to $6,000 in each box.

Video footage captured at one of the weddings shows Rankin taking one of the boxes, and getting into his vehicle and fleeing the scene.

When questioned by police, Rankin claimed he went to the weddings to hear vows because he was “going through a divorce.” He claimed it was helping ease the pain from the divorce.

Officials say there are reports from five other couples claiming the similar crime took place at their wedding. Those weddings happen to be in the same location.

He is currently under investigation for those reported thefts.
