Peter Newton, an Addison County, Vermont, sheriff, refuses to resign after pleading not guilty to four charges, including sexual assault.
On Tuesday, Newton, 50, was apprehended by Vermont State Police. This was after he was investigated in relation to a domestic disturbance at his residence in February.
Newton was charged with two counts of sexual assault, unlawful restraint, and domestic violence.
If he is found guilty, he could spend the rest of his life in prison.
Documents state that a woman had accused Newton of sexual assault. She says that Newton used his role as a sheriff to act as if he was “above everyone else.” She added that she went to Newton for assistance because she was in an abusive relationship. The woman claims that Newton became aggressive and had sex with her without her agreeing to do so.
The woman was said to have experienced pain, bruises, and threats by Newton because of his actions. Newton is accused of recording and laughing at her as the assault took place.
Newton’s lawyer stated in court that the sheriff is “duly elected” and doesn’t mind just “carrying out administrative duties.”
After his court hearing, Newton said that he was “still the sheriff.” He added that he wouldn’t be stepping down. This is although a judge has blocked him from performing certain law enforcement responsibilities.
In May, the sheriff had said that he wouldn’t be running for office again. He also believed that some had wished to hurt his positive reputation.
