Dallas police are investigating a shooting involving a security guard that left an armed gunman dead.

On August 3, around 12:45 p.m., officers responded to a shooting call at a hotel on the 4100 block of Preferred Place.

Upon arriving they learned that licensed security guard, 33 year old Michael Alexander, was patrolling the hotel area when he spotted two unknown men on the property. He approached the men and asked them to leave.

As Alexander was following the two men out he noticed one of them, 30 year old Cameron Birdwell, pull out a handgun and point it at him.

The two exchanged gunfire and Birdwell was shot. Emergency crews arrived at the scene and transported Birdwell to an area hospital where he died from his injuries.

No other injuries were reported.

This remains an ongoing investigation and will be referred to a grand jury.
