The Secret Service Director, Kimberly Cheatle, resigned Tuesday from her position following pressure from both Democrats and Republicans in Congress.
On Monday, a Congressional Committee held a hearing to receive answers from Cheatle about the security failures related to the assassination attempt of Donald Trump on July 13th. Cheatle stated in the hearing, “I think I am the best person to lead the Secret Service at this time.”
When it was time to answer questions from the Congressional Committee, Cheatle either couldn’t or refused to answer questions pertaining to the investigation into the security of the events on July 13th. Her lack of transparency in answering what Congress would describe as “basic questions” was alarming, and they suggested her resignation.
Cheatle turned in her resignation Tuesday morning, stating, “In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that, I have made the difficult decision to step down as your Director.”
Joe and Jill Biden released a statement commending Cheatle’s service, saying, “As a leader, it takes honor, courage, and incredible integrity to take full responsibility for an organization tasked with one of the most challenging jobs in public service.”
Donald Trump took to Truth Social to respond to Cheatle’s resignation. He wrote, “The Biden/Harris Administration did not properly protect me, and I was forced to take a bullet for Democracy. IT WAS MY GREAT HONOR TO DO SO!”
