With Super Bowl LV already being a historic event dealing with COVID-19 restrictions, in addition to the Tampa Bay Bucs playing on their home field, it will also be the very first time a female will officiate a big game.
Sarah Thomas, a down judge, will be apart of the assigned officiating crew. This will top off her 6th season by becoming the first female to officiate the Super Bowl in the National Football League’s history.
Back in 2015, she was named the 1st full-time female NFL official. In 2019, Thomas became the first female to officiate an NFL game.
“Sarah Thomas has made history yet again as the first female Super Bowl official,” Troy Vincent, Sr., the NFL’s executive vice president of football operations, released in a statement. “Her elite performance and commitment to excellence has earned her the right to officiate the Super Bowl. Congratulations to Sarah on this well-deserved honor.”
Carl Cheffers will be the lead referee over the seven-person crew of on-field game officials. Cheffers has been a game official for 21 seasons in the NFL and was promoted to referee back in 2008. The crew has about 88 years of NFL experience with 77 combined playoff games.
This will also be the first Super Bowl for Coleman and Thomas. This will be the second for Cheffers, Bryan, Baynes, Halls and Paganelli.
“Their body of work over the course of a 17-game season has earned them the honor of officiating the biggest game on the world’s biggest stage,” Vincent stated. “They are the best of the best.”
