About 230 people from 38 states have been infected since a Salmonella outbreak, connected to pre-cut cantaloupe, began.
Additionally, one death in Oregon has been reported, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said as they issued a food safety alert. Since the outbreak started on Nov. 17, five of the cases have been out of Oregon.
To add, over half of the people that have gotten sick have had to be hospitalized.
The CDC suggests not consuming pre-cut cantaloupe if you aren’t aware if it derived from the recalled brands, washing items or surfaces that may have come in contact with cantaloupe, and not consuming any recalled products.
The list of recalled cantaloupes are located on the Food and Drug Administration website.
Salmonella may lead to an illness if food that is swallowed is contaminated by the bacteria. Symptoms may begin to surface any where from six hours to six days after eating the food.
Many people that have been infected by Salmonella have diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps.
Children younger than 5, adults 65 years and older, and individuals with weakened immune systems are more at risk for a more serious illness.
