Jontay Porter, 24, has been prohibited from playing in the NBA for life. This comes after league officials stated that the Toronto Raptors player bet on his own team to lose and altered his play to tip the scales in his favor.
On Wednesday, Adam Silver announced Porter’s consequence, stating that league detectives found that in March, Porter was a part of a gambling operation that eventually put into question the validity of the NBA’s competition.
League officials reported that Porter provided confidential details concerning his health to at least one bettor. Afterwards, another bettor placed a $80,000 wager that Porter wouldn’t perform at his best. This was during the Raptors March 20th game against the Sacramento Kings.
If the wager hit, the league stated that the bettor would have profited $1.1 million dollars.
It was noted that Porter removed himself from the contest early on because he stated that he was sick. However, the league said that because of the uncommon betting behavior, the bet was halted, and money was not issued.
Not only that, but Silver stated that NBA detectives discovered that as Porter was playing for both the Raptors and their G- League affiliate from January to March, he placed at least “13 bets on NBA” competitions.
Silver also said that Porter utilized someone’s online bank account to place the wages and made more than $20,000.
“None of the bets involved any game in which Porter played. Three of the bets were multi-game parlay bets that included one Raptors game in which Porter bet that the Raptors would lose. All three bets lost,” he added.
The NBA has reached out to the feds and will keep investigating Porter and hand over any evidence.
Porter has played in the NBA since 2020. This season he started in five games and scored about 4.4 points with 3.2 rebounds.
