On June 1, Ramona Washington will begin as the new chief of police at the University of North Texas.
Washington attended the institution and earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in criminal justice while there.
She first became a part of the UNT police force in 2002 and is currently the captain of the agency’s criminal investigations department. Prior to her current position, she was a detention officer with Denton County.
Besides that, Washington was an adjunct member of the faculty as she was an instructor of criminal justice classes at North Central Texas College and UNT for multiple years.
Currently, she is still teaching training classes about implicit bias awareness and sexual assault investigations at the UNT Police Department.
University officials have also noted that Washington assisted in putting together the 30×30 program at UNT. This initiative heightens recruitment and retainment of women police professionals.
Washington will take the place of UNT Police Chief Ed Reynolds, who has been with the force for 30 years, as he goes into retirement in May.
