On Tuesday, in a prison in Ecuador, 116 people were killed and 80 were wounded in a prison riot. Six of those people were beheaded.

Officials said the tragedy at Litoral Penitentiary was caused by rival gangs connected to drug cartels, fighting over control of the prison.

Troops and police are being sent to the nation’s prisons. Ecuadorian President, Guillermo Lasso, has issued a state of emergency in the prison system.

Some bodies were discovered in the prison’s pipes. Photos have gone around on the internet depicting dead bodies all around.

Relatives of some inmates cried as they stood outside of the prison. They said people were being “decapitated and dismembered.” Guns, knives, and bombs were used in the battle.

Los Lobos and Los Choneros are said to be the two gangs fighting for control.

“….The more radical and violent the way they murder, the more they achieve their goal of control,” said a former military intelligence director in the country.
