Jajuan Henderson is a Black man who is said to have been shot and paralyzed by plainclothes officers in Trenton, New Jersey, last month.

Now, Henderson’s mother, his legal team, and a branch of the NAACP is suing the city and officers in the police department.

On February 12, close to midnight, Henderson was trying to get an iced tea out of a parked vehicle outside of a residence that he was visiting. He was sitting in the car when another vehicle pulled up alongside of him. Then, several men in plainclothes are accused of exiting their car and yelling at Henderson.

As Henderson retrieved his phone to call for help, the men broke out the driver’s side window and shot him in the neck, the plaintiffs say.

Henderson was struck four times in the neck and back, resulting in him being paralyzed. Additionally, he was facing four counts of aggravated assault filed against him. Later, those charges were dismissed.

One detective stated that officers were trying to conduct a motor vehicle stop, but Henderson wouldn’t cooperate. They say he wouldn’t give his i.d. and refused to roll his window down.

The detective added that Henderson tried to drive off when his window was broken but ran into a car behind him.

“…another needless police shooting that left a 29-year-old Black man paralyzed from the chest down,” stated Richard Smith of the state branch of the NAACP.

“My heart almost broke, and I was devastated. I thought Jajuan was going to die. I’m here to get justice for my son,” commented Gia Henderson.
